This is
a kolum (sp?)
in front of the University of Wisconsin College Year in
India-Madurai program house. A kolum is a customary
design-pattern kind of temporary welcoming mat that the
woman of the house will draw outside their home everyday
with rice flour. One of the lovely cooks at the program
house made this enamel paint kolum to greet us students
when we first arrived. This kolum is no longer. A couple
weeks ago the cooks and I scraped it off the sidewalk
with sharp objects and some terrible liquid that stinks
like anything. (<-- A little Indian English for you.) |
