Sandhanam, Ponnukalli, and Biju. The four of them divide up the administrative and maintenance work the facility. I'm not going to pretend like I know exactly what all of them do, but I can say that that they are all supremely nice people and helped make my stay at CESCI really pleasant and productive. A little bit about each of them: (CESCI) Sekar was the main person responsible for setting each of us students up with a contact person in the respective villages we visited. Ponnukalli is quite knowledgeable in Tamil cinema, and does a fantabulous impersonation of the former film megastar turned Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MGR. And Biju, who is a wonderful conversation partner, be the topic Rajinikanth or globalization. I was so incredibly happy to hear from him that in the 1940's at a time when there were less than 90,000 phones in all of India, one of them belonged to Mahatma Gandhi. It seems pretty true to me that it's a good thing to live a simple life and reduce your material wants and needs, but it's really hard to fit my love of computers and technology into that statement. But if Gandhi had a phone in the forties, than there's gotta be a way... |
